ASSITEJ South Africa (Theatre for Children and Young People) is a member-driven association whose doors are open to all individuals, companies, organisations and groups working within the field of theatre for children and young people, directly or indirectly, regardless of age, race, language, religion or political conviction. The types of categories of membership of the association entails that it accommodates people of all age groups.

ASSITEJ South Africa seeks to appoint a Finance and Operations Manager / Accountant, based in Vrygrond, Cape Town.

Duration: This is a full time position, on an initial 12 months’ contract to start in February 2021, with the potential of renewal for a further one year, based on the availability of funding.

Report to: The Executive Director and the Treasurer of ASSITEJ South Africa

The purpose of the position is the overall responsibility for managing all financial aspects of the organisation, thereby enabling ASSITEJ SA to implement its mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Capturing monthly transactions on SAGE ONE by funding contract across all bank accounts
  • Monthly reconciliations of all bank accounts and petty cash accounts
  • Preparation of monthly financial reports and management accounts
  • VAT reconciliations and submissions on E-filing.
  • Preparing monthly payroll for up to 30 staff or more and processing staff salaries monthly
  • Preparing financial reporting to the Board of Directors quarterly
  • Preparing financial reports for all donors as required and within the contractual timeframes and in accordance with donor contracts
  • Preparing the annual income tax return
  • Assisting in the preparation of the organizational budget and project-based budgets
  • Maintenance of all tax matters with SARS (PAYE, VAT, Income Tax, Tax Clearance Certificates)
  • Updating and maintaining electronic accounting records
  • Preparing and coordinating the annual audit process.
  • Processing payments correctly
  • Registering/ deregistering staff with the Dept. of Labour for UIF as when needed
  • Managing and supervising all procurement, ensuring alignment with policies and donor contracts
  • Monitoring project expenditure and implement corrective action where such expenditure exceeds or is not consistent with agreed budgets and donor requirements
  • Ensuring all documents are electronically and physically filed and available for internal and external audits
  • Correcting and rectifying any qualifications made by auditors
  • Reviewing the insurance policy to ensure assets are suitably covered
  • Asset and facilities management including insurance and office systems oversight
  • Supporting Project Managers with logistical arrangements when required
  • Supporting the Director with financial reporting and identifying new funders
  • Mentoring & supervision of Finance intern
  • Ensuring that all processes and documents are in compliance with accounting standards, internal policies, relevant legislation and governance practices

Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting or Business Management
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in an accounting/financial management role (non-negotiable)
  • Effective oral/written communication skills in at least two of the following languages: English, IsiXhosa, Afrikaans and willing to work in a township environment
  • Strong computer skills, with work experience using different online accounting systems, specifically SAGE ONE
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Experience with projects and project accounting will be advantageous
  • Experience within the NGO environment and donor reporting requirements will be preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting and corporate finance principles and procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and ensuring accuracy and confidentiality is a must
  • Financial report writing skills
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong planning, time management and project management skills, able to work with limited supervision
  • Results-oriented, professional, accountable, proactive and trustworthy individual
  • Strong interpersonal skills and people’s person, who appreciates diversity
  • Proven ability to work as a team member
  • Must have a desire and/or interest to work in the Arts and Culture sector
  • Must be flexible when overtime is required
  • Own car and valid driver’s license
