HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
Report to: Chair of Board of Governors
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Relevant tertiary qualification preferably at post graduate level. In-depth knowledge of the education environment. Extensive teaching and learning experience and previous experience as Deputy Principal/Principal of a High School (preferably a Catholic school). This is a senior leadership role and requires experience in a similar environment at a senior management level, ideally in a similar school, where the individual must have managed resources and finances successfully.
Experience in a girls and boys school environment and across all high school age groups is a requirement.
Possess/obtain all necessary clearances, e.g. SAPS Police Clearance Certificate. Credible references to be provided.
Building trust – interact with others in a way that gives them confidence in their motives, Business Acumen – knowledgeable in current and possible future policies, practise, trends, technology and information. Coaching and guiding employees in order to make their performance effective. The ability to deal with conflict management and must have ethical and collaborative leadership.
Strategic focus with the understanding of how an organisation must change in light of internal/external trends and influences. Decision making/problem solving skills, Team leadership, managing and measuring work, must also have political and interpersonal savvy and a vision. Strong communication skills, creativity and innovation, stakeholder engagement, good time management skills.
Must in addition be assertive, change oriented, flexible and be resilient. Flexibility and adaptation is crucial when facing tough calls. Must be able to make decisions authoritatively and wisely. Ethics and values must demonstrate a commitment to live/work within the Marist values, Catholic ethos and mission of the school ensuring that diversity and inclusion is fundamental to all actions. Must be able to maintain effective performance under pressure.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (KPAs)
Leadership of Strategic Direction and Alignment
Assist in development of overall strategy and policies for the school. Articulate the plans to achieve these, motivate the School community and to drive implementation. Identify strategic opportunities for the sustainability and optimisation of the school. Identify key challenges and appropriate strategies. Build influential and strategic new stakeholder relationships. Report to the board on progress against the strategic plan and annual priorities.
Leadership as High School Principal
Play a governance role, as an ex-officio Board member and work closely with the Chair of Board and Deputy Chair of Board. Ensure sound corporate governance principles and practices are in place and legal and regulatory requirements are adhered to. Define reporting structures and build inter-school relationships, stakeholders (including Alumni) to foster a “community of belonging – Family Spirit”.
Ensure succession plan for key positions and make final decisions regarding staff appointments and ensure the well-being and organisational health of all staff. Ensure that the education enterprise is financed effectively. Direct the transformation and diversity agenda for the school. Identify strategic risks and formulate and implement risk management.
Role on School Executive Committee
Provide strategic input and support to the Executive team. Ensure that each Head of Department delivers on the intent to inspire excellence. Guide and support Directors of Sport in their achievement of planning and implementation. Chair Grade Head committees and RE projects.
