Job Description

Soccer Laduma has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic Journalist. The successful candidate will be enlisted to write for the Soccer Laduma newspaper and digital platforms, showing the required command of short form and long form journalism. The successful candidate will work closely with the editors of the newspaper as well as the content manager and editor of the digital platforms to craft content that is in line with the editorial direction that has been set out.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completed a degree or diploma in English, journalism or media studies, or demonstrate the ability to deliver on the expectations.
  • Must have a sound knowledge of football, either local or international, or both.
  • A requirement is to watch football very regularly and be up to date with the latest development football, either local or international, or both.
  • Strong digital skills.
  • Passion for South African and/or international football and a knowledge of clubs, leagues and players.
  • Understanding of media law and be able to adhere to the South African Press Code.

Duties & Responsibilities include:

 Long form print 

  • The journalist will need to submit a defined number of interviews and/ or features for the print edition on a weekly basis.
  • The interviews and/ or features must be written within the publication’s style guide and adhere to the editorial structures laid out by the publication or as defined by the editor.
  • Journalists need to work closely with the editor.
  • Deadlines set in place must be met.

Short form print

  • The journalist will need to submit a defined number of articles for the print edition on a weekly basis.
  • Articles must be written within the publication’s style guide and adhere to the editorial structures laid out by the publication or as defined by the editor.
  • Journalists need to work closely with the editor.
  • Deadlines set in place must be met.

Web articles

  • The journalist will need to reach the predetermined overall page view target. The targets are divided up into weekly, monthly and yearly targets.
  • A minimum prescribed quantity of articles must be published per week in order to achieve the weekly page view targets and in turn the monthly and yearly overall page view targets.
  • The minimum article quantity must be achieved, but in the event that the overall page view target is not achieved, the journalist will be required to write additional articles in order to achieve the setmonthly target.
  • Articles must be written within the publication’s style guide and adhere to the editorial structures laid out by the publication or as defined by the editor.
  • Journalists need to work closely with the content manager.
  • A journalist’s web content offering must align with the editorial schedule defined by the publication.
  • Deadlines set in place must be met.

Functional tasks:

  • E-mailing of web articles within each silo in order to drive editorial direction within the team and for peer review.
  • Expectations on internal communications is for mails to be replied to by COB of the day. For urgent replies and communications, calling and Whatsapp messages are used.
  • Articles need to be loaded onto the CMS as required, including correct SEO practice, images and headlines, and within deadlines.
  • Selected editorial calendars need to be populated as per the journalist’s diary.
  • Develop and maintain network of officials and sources within the soccer fraternity.

Originating:

  • Submit pitches for web and print offering in line with the division’s and editorial expectations, daily and/or weekly.
  • Content recipes to be drawn up by journalists in line with the editorial approach.
  • Innovation ideas will be worked on monthly, with a view of adding new and exciting content to the readers offering.
  • Populating information databases to drive an editorial information system.

Reporting/ Admin:

  • Internal daily article analysis to be submitted, with an option or inclusion of a weekly analysis based on seniority.
  • Internal monthly self-evaluation report to be completed as defined by the publication.
  • Media 24 tutorials to be completed in line with Media 24’s requirements.
  • Development and up-skilling of the journalist through internal or external sources, if requested by the publication. eg, My Academy.
  • Working hours: Flexi hours is an option, on approval by management and/or the editor.
