Job Description

The Legal Practice Council (LPC) is currently embarking on a process to fill the role of a Legal Officer : Pro-bono in their Gauteng Provincial Office – Pretoria.

About the Company

The Legal Practice Council is a national, statutory body established in terms of section 4 of the Legal Practice Act, No 28 of 2014.  The Council regulate the affairs of and exercise jurisdiction over all legal practitioners (attorneys and advocates) and candidate legal practitioners.

Minimum Appointment Requirements

  • Matric/Grade 12 Certificate
  • Law Degree
  • Admission as a Legal Practitioner
  • 2 years Post Admission experience in a Legal environment or in a professional regulatory environment Knowledge of Legal Practice Act, No 28 of 2014
  • Section 109 Regulations
  • Code of Conduct for all Legal Practitioners & Court Rules

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess applications and refer successful applications for pro-bono services
  • Follow up on successful applications
  • Provide feedback to applicants
  • Identify agenda items
  • Prepare agenda and minutes for pro-bono committee
  • Attend to all correspondence as required by the pro-bono committee
  • Provide input to the Committee with regards to statistics, processes and procedures for the purposes of improvement to services
  • Participate in the Committee and report back on outcomes / findings
  • Ensure relevant stakeholders are apprised of all developments in the law and the pro-bono rules
  • Coordinate quarterly meetings with relevant stakeholders
  • Engage relevant stakeholders for opportunities to provide pro-bono services
  • Coordinate the assessment of application for joint venture agreement and referral to the pro-bono committee
  • Prepare agreement for approved applications
  • Maintain record of joint venture agreements
  • Keep records of attorney’s pro-bono hours
  • Keep records of attorney’s participation in pro-bono projects
  • Maintain and safeguard agendas/minutes and important documentation
  • Address telephonic and written enquiries pertaining to pro-bono
  • Address queries and correspondence within the allocated timeframe and in accordance with the Act.
